In 2012, MD Anderson Cancer Center — one of the most celebrated cancer research institutions in the world — signed the initial contract for an IBM Watson AI system designed to transform oncology (the partnership was publicly announced by IBM in 2013). The project ultimately cost $62 million. In 2016, it was cancelled.
The technology worked. The organization did not.
That distinction — between technological capability and organizational readiness — is the argument I have spent thirty-five years building toward, inside institutions with far more at stake than a single failed pilot. It is the argument at the heart of the book I have just completed.
The Book

The book introduces three frameworks that together define the methodology I have developed and refined through seventeen years of work at InterOPERANT:

The ARC (Adaptive Reasoning Core) — the organizational infrastructure that SYNTROPY builds. What the methodology constructs, sprint by sprint, over 36 months.

SYNTROPY is the process. The ARC is what it builds. COVERGENCE is the destination.
A Prediction I Am Prepared to Stand Behind
Within the next decade, artificial intelligence will develop near sentience — the capacity to reason, adapt, and participate in organizational thinking as a genuine cognitive partner. This is not speculation. It is the direction of the technology, confirmed by the peer-reviewed research on human-AI co-evolution that has emerged over the past decade.

Why I Wrote This Now
This question is not new to me. At twenty, during my undergraduate years, I became fascinated by how the human nervous system regulates itself — how, given real-time feedback about its own state, it learns to adjust toward equilibrium. By twenty-one I had delivered my senior thesis on it: the neurobiology of human biofeedback pathways, a subject that sits inside the broader tradition of cybernetics and control systems theory. By 2005, as President and CEO of Life Biosystems AG, I was asking a version of the same question of a machine — using natural language processing, one of the earliest practical applications of artificial intelligence, to find patterns in biological data that no researcher could hold in mind unaided. The scale has changed many times since then. The question never has.
I have been developing the SYNTROPY methodology at InterOPERANT since 2008. The InterOPERANT Operations Manual — the operational playbook behind this book — represents seventeen years of validated practice inside complex healthcare and technology organizations.
I have watched the external incubator model fail — as a corporate innovation strategy. I have watched AI tool deployments fail. I have watched organizations spend enormous sums on technology they were not built to use. I have also watched — in the organizations that did the work correctly — what genuine human-AI co-evolution produces.
That critique does not extend to programs like MASS Challenge, where I currently serve as a Judge for the Security and Resiliency track, or Rice University’s OwlSpark accelerator, where I have advised and judged for years. Those programs are narrowly defined by design — built to launch independent startups, not to transform an existing corporation from within. The failure I describe in ACCELERATE! is not incubation itself. It is asking a general-purpose external accelerator to do work that only a purpose-built internal system can do.
What I have seen, over and over, is the difference between organizations that will be ready for what is coming and organizations that will not. ACCELERATE! exists to put every leader who reads it in the first group.
Who This Book Is For
ACCELERATE! is written for four audiences: corporate innovation leaders who have been told to ‘do something with AI’ and are discovering that tools without organizational infrastructure produce the same result as MD Anderson’s $62 million experiment; university and nonprofit incubator operators building the next generation of innovation infrastructure; entrepreneurs making the transition from early-stage agility to organizational scale; and startup founders who need to understand what they are building toward.
